Sixty Before Sixty

It startles me to think that next year I am going to complete my 60th year on Planet Earth. Absolutely mind-boggling. And I remember a while ago, I was thinking, ‘Wouldn’t it be FUN to do sixty new things before I reach sixty?’ but I think that was when I was 58 and I convinced myself that I shouldn’t start this sixty before sixty thing whilst there was more than a year to go, as it would a) be tantamount to cheating and b) defeat the object of the challenge.

And so I didn’t give the idea much more thought, other stuff getting in the way and occupying my mind.

This evening, I thought about it again. The thought was triggered by watching Sarah Hadland on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ talking about women of a certain age being very good at telling themselves they couldn’t do something when, in fact, they jolly well could if they tried. And although Sarah is six years younger than me, I thought, ‘She’s right. Women of a certain age are often left to moulder on the scrap heap once they lose the capacity to have babies or be useful in the workplace.’

I’ll admit to feeling a bit ‘scrap heapy’ myself over the last couple of years. Like I had been made redundant from society - ‘Just go and sit in that corner, there’s a dear, and don’t bother anyone else whilst you fade into insignificance.’

Of course, having worked through a lot of head stuff, I know this to be nonsense now, but I don’t want to denigrate how I felt because I suspect a lot of other women in their fifties have felt the same, too.

I digress. The sixty before sixty thought has been reignited! I took out my notebook and began to jot down ideas. I ran out of ideas after Number 4. I have to find another 56 ideas. Which is quite annoying because I thought generating ideas would be more of a doddle. But the REALLY annoying thing is that I’ve just realised that I’ve only got another fifty weeks until I reach sixty because it has been two weeks since my birthday and Time is already a-flying.

I’d better crack on…

Did you have a blog post about this a while ago? Didn’t you jot down some ideas back then? Were there not a couple of comments with ideas? Or have you already looked at those and that’s the four you have now? 1. Start hiking distances. 2. Go to Shetland/Scotland, 3. hike up the three highest mountains in UK , Go to Norway/ Arctic circle, see the northern lights dance. 5. Hike the Kungsleden trail. 6. Knit a lot more! Well, I’ll better get going…

You’re quite right, KJ. I did write a blog about this ages ago and then I forgot about it because it seemed too way in the future to consider and then I thought about it again. I don’t remember writing anything about hiking great distances though. Not my thing. But I am working on a list at the moment and who knows- I might even get started on it!!

The picture was pure laziness on my part, KJ. One of the first to come up in an online search. And not at all representative of my ambitions or abilities!

The Frosted Dawn Enigma

The decorators are in at the moment. Stairs and landing. Given my previous history of 'Hoo Ha Occurring on Stairs ' - reference the Trapped Under the Sofa Incident and the Foot Wedged Between Bookcase and Stair Rise Debacle - I thought it wise to pay for professionals to decorate the stairs and landing rather than get myself in a mix with ladder and plank combinations and achieve the Magic Three of staircase accidents. The decorators are a father and son combo who go by the  names of Craig and David. This automatically causes me entertainment. 'Came in on a Monday, prepped, filled and undercoated, back on Thursday, first top coating, by Friday finishing touches...' Okay, not as frisky or well-scanned as the original song, but you get where I'm coming from. Anyway, before they started the job Craig asked what colour I wanted for the walls. 'Same colour as the downstairs walls, please,' said I. 'Dulux Frosted Dawn.' And then white for ...

Day 1 - Decisions Are Made Beyond the Author's Control.

‘Well,’ I say, looking at the expectant faces gathered around the huge table in the Great Dining Hall of Much Malarkey Manor, ‘I didn’t think it was going to happen this year, but it is!’ There is a sharp intake of breath as everyone wonders of what I speak. I’ve been muttering about all sorts recently, and I’m not talking liquorice here either.   ‘The Much Malarkey Manor Annual and Traditional Christmas Story!’ I say, and wait for the expulsed air of relief to settle before I continue. ‘I thought we had done it all. I thought we had covered every Christmas story there was. I’ve been wracking my brains for a full two months now, trying to come up with something we haven’t done before and then it hit me! We haven’t done a version of one of the Great Christmas Films of Yore!’ ‘Your what?’ says Mrs Slocombe, who is more interested in the selection of pastries I have brought to this breakfast meeting, because that is what one does, isn’t it? Eat pastries at breakfast...

Sun Puddles

A few weeks ago, I met up with a dear friend for a meditation and healing afternoon, both of us being light workers on the spirit pathway. It did me good to re-engage in a bit of focused energy channelling (because I have let my practice slip somewhat) and during the afternoon the words ‘sun puddles’ popped into my head.  Now, I know this wasn’t my human brain thinking these words because I have never heard the phrase before; when I arrived home, I looked it up and said to myself, ‘Aaah, you mean sun spots!’ This is a sun puddle... ...there! That thing that Flora is lying on. No, not the sofa - the warm patch of sunshine on the sofa. Here are Flora and Bambino sharing a sun puddle... This proves that no matter how much they scrap with each other and try to denude each other of fur all over my rugs, they secretly share a mutual and fond admiration. I think. And here is Bambino on a sun puddle that has come to rest on my legs... It’s his casual, ‘I’m so cool’ pose. Metaphorically coo...
